Charles C. Owen Named C.M. “Mac” Angel Outstanding Discussion Leader of the Year
The Outstanding Discussion Leader award is presented to a continuing education course discussion leader who received the highest average evaluations in a given year. In order to qualify for the award, discussion leaders must have taught at least eight continuing education hours during the year, and the course(s) must have been sponsored by the ASCPA.
Charles C. Owen is the senior tax member of Gill Elrod Ragon Owen & Sherman, P.A., Attorneys, Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as the President and a shareholder. A graduate from the University of Arkansas School of Business and Law in Fayetteville, Charlie has been a tax practitioner for over forty-seven years and is well-versed in all aspects of taxation.
Also a Certified Public Accountant, Charlie's practice focuses primarily in wealth preservation planning. This discipline entails the coupling of traditional estate planning law with the use of Alaskan trusts, family limited partnerships, limited liability companies, and tax planning to significantly reduce or eliminate confiscatory estate taxes and to protect clients' assets in the event of the occurrence of catastrophic litigation claims.
Charlie speaks and writes nationally on a variety of legal and tax topics including tax planning, elder representation, wealth preservation planning, legal ethics, tax planning, and tax-exempt organizations. Charlie excels at turning complicated tax laws into understandable, practical applications with a touch or two of humor.

In addition, Charlie spoke on ethics – But, Saint Peter, I Was Just Being a CPA – to several CPA
groups. He presented winning presentations to the Arkansas Bar Association, and closed the year with S Corporation Tax Issues at the Arkansas Federal Tax Institute.
Charlie Owen was previously named the recipient of the Arkansas Society of CPAs Outstanding Discussion Leader Award twice in 2006 and 2008. He is also an eight-time recipient of the Arkansas Bar Association’s The Best of CLE Award, and in 2000 was named as the first recipient of The Best of The Best CLE. Charlie Owen is listed in Mid-South SuperLawyers (Probate and Trust), and his peers have named him as one of "Arkansas’s Best Tax Lawyers" for the past several years in an annual survey conducted by The Arkansas Times.
In July, 1995, the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Society of CPAs voted to rename the Arkansas Society of CPAs Discussion Leader of the Year Award in honor of C.M. "Mac" Angel, in recognition and appreciation for his contributions to the ASCPA CPE Program.
The Arkansas Society of CPAs C.M. "Mac" Angel Discussion Leader of the Year Award is presented to continuing education course discussion leaders receiving the highest average evaluations in a given year. In order to qualify for the award, the discussion leader must have taught at least eight hours during the year; the course(s) taught must have been sponsored by the Arkansas Society of CPAs; and the discussion leader must be a member of the ASCPA or a resident of Arkansas who assists the ASCPA.
